It's 8 p.m. in Pune (9:30 in KC). We had another very full day. Interviewed five professionals in the office, including three expats, an Indian Telecom professionals and Indian Energy professional. All were very passionate about their work and their personal interests. Interesting point of view from expats was that with the extremely affordable domestic assistance (maid, nanny, cooks) they are able to spend much more quality time together as a family.
We also visited the Aga Khan Palace, which is where Ghandi's wife and beloved secretary died and where they and Ghandi are buried. It was very low key, no tour guides, a couple security guards when you first walk in and a very modest monument at the burial site. Our local guide Leena has lived in Pune her whole life but had never been there.
We spent a little time at an orphanage that B&V supports through foundation donations and professionals' fundraising. We only saw maybe a dozen children as they've just finished the school term and many went to stay with relatives. 325 children are permanent residents here (mostly street children who have lost their parents), and I don't know where they put them all. The dormitory was small and spartan. B&V is helping them build a dining hall and kitchen. The kids we saw were older, probably 10 and a little above. The workers at the orphanage are all volunteers.
Tomorrow morning we start at 7 at Joel Lundquist's family's apartment. We're going to film his two sons heading to school and hopefully get some classroom shots at their international school. We'll also be capturing the new office location that will open soon and some local shopping at a street market (we've been warned about the smell from the meat side), a traditional grocery store, shopping mall, club for tennis, etc. Thursday we'll film more of the local sites/attractions.
I need to run to dinner with Joseph Mahendran, office lead in Pune in a few minutes, so here are few quick highlights.
My suitcase is fixed! It cost the equivalent of about $6. Let's hope it's a permanent fix.
Every time I plug something into the converter it sparks, but I haven't blown up my laptop or phone yet.
I had real Chai tea in Mumbai and it was delicious. But I still miss my Starbucks chai.
When I went into my hotel room last night I couldn't figure out how to turn on the lights. I had to use my cell phone to try and find the light buttons. And once I got one on, it would turn itself out a minute later. I felt like I was on Candid Camera. Turns out you have to insert your keycard into a holder by the door to keep the lights on. Who knew?! Luckily the bellman brought up my bags and explained.
Missing my family and friends and Bella my dog, but hoping everyone's well.
Great job on the blogging. All these would be appropriate internally. Loved the shot of Lynne getting bumped by the cow. Glad to hear things are off and running.
