It's 8 p.m. Bangkok time on Easter. Instead of mass today, I spent a lot of time with Buddhas, an elephant and some really nice people from the Bangkok office. (This is where I was going to insert pictures but that function's not working right now).
We met Bill at the hotel at 7 a.m. for location shooting day (and Doug Wharton from IT was in the lobby too). We were joined by Khun Orn (Khun is the way they address each other, like Mr. or Ms.) and driver Khun Mai who took us to the Grand Palace. We couldn't go in but could see the amazingly beautiful tops of the palace buildings. Very exotic, gold, colorful and detailed. We then drove to the office, which is across from 7-11 where we grabbed waters, to join up with Khun Ta, Khun Aw, Khun Oil and Khun Ice (not sure about spellings and which was which). English was a bit of a challenge. Me trying to understand "Oil" was like the scene in Night at the Museum 2 where General Custer can't say "Sacajaweha."
We drove about an hour to Wai Yai Chaya Mongkol (The Great Temple of Auspicious Victory) in Ayudhaya. It was built in 1350. Buddhas all around and covered in gold robes, like monks. As offerings people presented lotus flowers, lit incense sticks and bought little goldleaf squares that they would put onto the statues.
Then we went to see another temple with a GIANT Buddha. It was maybe three stories tall. Then we headed to a floating market with lots of shops. Had lunch there and Lynne and I were highly impressed with the amount of food this tiny Bangkok gals could put away! They just kept eating and eating and more food kept on coming. We made lettuce wraps, had pork kabobs, peannutty veggie dish, squid, shrimp, and much, much more. Hope everything we ate was OK. So far we've both been feeling fine.
There was also an elephant show at the floating market. He was about 15 feet away from us and could throw a dart at a balloon, kick a soccer ball and he made a basket! Very cool to see so close up. We saw a few other markets and then headed back to the hotel about 5. Another great but tiring day. We spend a lot of time in cars getting places. Bangkok's very hot and humid. I was, once again, a big sweaty American.
Here are a few other random thoughts:
We didn't have any issues with customs in Bangkok; we sailed right through with no tries at bribing us.
The Blog buttons are all in Thai so I'm not sure what I'm pushing.
I have on "Glee" in my hotel room (the Michael Jackson tribute one) and it has Thai subtitles.
I can never get the soap out of the wrapper in hotels. Why do they make it so hard?!
We got disinfected on the plane from India to Bangkok. They made an announcement that they were about to spray disinfectant, cover your eyes if you have contacts, it's approved by the WHO and they a flight attendant walked up and down the aisle spraying it overhead. I covered up. Very weird experience. I don't like being deloused.
Saw "Puss in Boots" on the plane. Hilarious! Highly recommend it.
We head to the Bangkok office tomorrow for interviews and hope to have some time to work and edit video.
