The last two days have been a whirlwind. Thursday we toured around Pune and saw the remnants of a palace from 1730, a temple/cave combo and saw some shopping areas. They were PACKED with people and it was HOT. I was a drippy mess. Didn't buy anything there but we've been making a dent in the nice shops in our hotel in Mumbai. We drove back to Mumbai from Pune Thursday afternoon. Took about 3 hours. We've spent a lot of time in a car but it's air conditioned, so I'm OK with it.
Friday we were joined by Priyanka from the Pune office and we flew to Jamnagar, a very industrial town about an hour away. We visited the Reliance refinery and it is bigger than you can imagine. Pipes, stack and engineery stuff everywhere. Lynne shot video and I took photos. It was much hotter there and dry and windy. Kinda like a high desert. We were shown around by a chemical engineer who was very friendly. Lots of security all over the site. We were stopped about every 5 minutes to check our papers for shooting since it's not allowed there. The site is very sustainable. They reuse all the water from the refinery to water what they call a Green Belt. It's about a 100,000 mango trees and teak trees. The horticulturist jumped in the car and told us all about it. I think he said they have more than 100 varieties of mangos, including a hybrid they created called the Reliance Mango. We also saw peacocks living in the Green Belt. They estimate they have more than 700 peacocks.
Reliance has its own city basically. There's the RelianceMart, which looks as big as WalMart. And there are neighborhoods where thousands of the workers live. We did get to see one of the control rooms at the project site but weren't allowed to take pics. It looked like NASA. 8 HUGE video screens to monitor every piece of equipment.
We had fun shopping in the hotel. The sales people are very fun and like to negotiate. I think I got some good deals but who knows. We've been back three times!
We head to the airport in a few minutes to go to Bangkok, Thailand. I will really miss India. I just can't say how fantastic the people are here. Will get in to the hotel by 8 p.m. probably if we're on time. And then we meet Bill Crabb and a few others at 7 a.m to tour the area on Easter Sunday. I'll miss my family on Easter. I'll be thinking about you though! Have some ham and jelly beans for me!
Hope everyone's well.
